Heer named greatcoat for a General
This is one stunning looking great coat.
Many of the General's great coats out there, are upgraded officer's coats. On this one, the red lapels are clearly part of the coat construction - it was tailored as a General's coat.
It has slip on shoulder boards for a Generalmajor, however there are small punch holes from rank pips, one on each board, so likely it was once a Generalleutnant.
In the inner pocket there's a hand stitched tailors tag with the name 'Dr. Schneider'. IMO the name tag is 100% original to the coat. Both the tag and the stitching show honest age and wear, and the tag shows no signs of previous stitch holes. I realize that some collectors are very sceptical towards hand sewn labels, but it is not uncommon to see, even from top names such as Holters. See this thread for an example of that.
However the name Schneider is a quite common German name, and there was more than one General with this last name.
The previous owner did some research which strongly points to Oakleaves winner and 4th Panzer Division commander Erich Schneider, since he was the only of the Schneiders to hold an academic degree. There is no bullet proof evidence of this though, and so, it is not reflected in the price.
The research material as well as a post war signed photo of Eric Schneider, is included.
The coat is overall in very good condition, and a nice larger size. It came from a very well reputed US collector/dealer.
